Maths

At Moorfield, we are constantly reviewing the teaching and learning of mathematics in order to address the needs of our children and the changes in the national primary curriculum. Our vision for the teaching of mathematics can be summed up in the statement from the The Primary National Strategy:

"Good mathematics teaching is lively, engaging and involves a carefully planned blend of approaches that direct children's learning....the pitch and pace of the work is sensitive to the rate at which children learn while ensuring expectations are kept high and progress is made by all children"

(The Primary National Strategy)

The aims of mathematics at Moorfield are:

  • To promote enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion.
  • To develop logical thinking and reasoning skills through a natural curiosity and investigative approach.
  • To promote confidence and competence so that children are 'proud to shine' about their achievements.
  • To develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of numbers and the number system.
  • To develop the ability to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning in a range of contexts.
  • To develop a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered and presented.
  • To explore features of shape and space and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts.
  • To understand the importance of mathematical skills in everyday life.
