Early Years' Foundation Stage Curriculum

The curriculum offered to boys and girls in Nursery is based on the Curriculum Guidelines to meet the Early Learning Goals. Our activities are therefore based on the following six areas of Learning.

  • Personal, social and emotional development. Your child learns to be self-confident, take an interest in things, know what their own needs are, tell the difference between right and wrong, and be able to dress and undress.
  • Communication, language and literacy. Your child learns to talk confidently and clearly, enjoying stories, songs and poems, hearing and saying sounds and linking them to the alphabet. They read some familiar words, use a pencil with confidence and are encouraged to mark make.
  • Mathematical development. Boys and girls develop an understanding of maths through stories, songs, games and imaginative play. They become comfortable with numbers and ideas such as heavier than or bigger. They become aware of shapes and space.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world. Your child explores and finds out about the world around them. They are encouraged to ask questions about why things happen and how things work. They build with different materials, know about everyday technology and learn what it is used for. They find out about past events in their lives and their families’ lives. There are opportunities to find out about different cultures and beliefs.
  • Physical development. The boys and girls learn to move confidently, controlling their body and handling equipment. They are encouraged to develop their fine and gross motor skills as well as their awareness of themselves, others and the space around them.
  • Creative development. Your child will be singing every day, exploring colours and shapes, trying out all kinds of different dance, making things, telling stories and making music.

The activities are structured and differentiated so that they are meaningful. The boys and girls are learning, developing, making progress and above all having fun!

We try to encourage boys and girls in the Foundation Stage to be independent learners, making their own choices and decisions as well as being responsible for the equipment and materials which they use.

We feel that through our play based curriculum our boys and girls can try out new ideas, and practise and consolidate new knowledge and skills in a safe context. This approach to learning ensures boys and girls are actively involved, engaged and motivated.
