Moorfield

Summer Term 2010

SENIOR SIX BROADENED CURRICULUM

Now that the Senior School examinations are over, we provide a broadened curriculum for Senior 6 girls. Each year we try to improve on the year that has gone before. I hope that this year all Senior 6 girls will find their final three months at Moorfield to be stimulating and fulfilling. It would be easier for the teachers to continue with a normal timetable but I am very grateful for their willingness to do extra work for the girls and we hope it will prove worthwhile.

One English lesson a week will be given over to Spanish where Ms Cooke will give an introduction to another modern language.

Maths will continue largely uninterrupted with aspects of number and shape being covered. Homework will continue to be given and we will not tolerate girls who do not make an effort or hand their work in late. Academic progress must continue. The Moorfield Senior 6 exam has been moved to early May just before the girls go to Robinwood from 10th to 12th May. The purpose of this is to keep the academic focus sharp and to give a reason for the effort.

In Science the girls will plan an individual investigation. From hypothesis through to conclusion, each girl will have the opportunity to carry out her own practical research. Cross curricular science, geography and ICT: prepare for an adventure! In groups of four the girls will make plans to take part in an overseas expedition. They will research the, environments that they will encounter. Keeping to a strict budget they will plan the purchase of essential equipment, clothing and medical supplies. Pre expedition medical requirements will also be taken into account. On their return, the girls will recount their adventures. They will interview and film each other, for their local news network!

Tennis lessons will continue. While these are taking place the other girls will complete a learning Log about Moorfield School. The type of project they produce will be entirely their own choice and should allow for different styles of learning.

Before May half term Ms Cooke will run a Scrapbooking workshop to show the girls her hobby and hopefully inspire them to be creative with a page for the Senior 6 book distributed at the end of the year. They can then finish these pages at home.

The girls will participate in the Wharfedale Festival in May.

We are running a Dragon’s Den project where girls have to work in groups to create a box of chocolates and convince us it is worthy of sale. We are indebted to a Moorfield governor, Julie Tankard, for inspiring us with this idea.

The play this year is going to be a challenge to produce. Mrs Clark and Mrs Hall want to use all the singing talent we have so it’s a proper musical, ‘Seussical’. This will dominate music lessons and, in the summer term, history will be replaced by the play although the girls will be set a history project to do at home.

In the final few weeks of term, Ms Cooke will be creating a film with the girls, which will include posing, singing and filming. The finished piece will be shown at the leavers’ farewell assembly on the last day of term.

It is a tradition that Senior 6 girls have a ‘Mothers and Daughters Day Out’ on the last Monday of the Summer Term. This year that would be on 12th July. What you do is entirely up to you although Filey has been a favoured destination for the last few years. This is one day of the academic year, which the Moorfield staff do not plan or run; however, it is always a highlight and has proved to be a wonderful way to celebrate being together before everyone goes their separate ways.

ENJOY YOUR FINAL THREE MONTHS AT MOORFIELD.
MAKE IT A TIME TO REMEMBER FOREVER!
